AI Companion: What It Is, How It Works, and the Best Apps
An AI companion is a conversational application built to sustain one ongoing relationship with you rather than answer isolated questions: it keeps a persistent memory of your life, holds a stable personality, and in some cases starts conversations on its own. That is the line between an AI companion and a general chatbot. A chatbot resets; a companion accumulates. The section below explains what the category does and does not do, and then ranks the eight apps that define it in 2026 — from safe-for-work daily support through to deep character roleplay.

How we evaluated these apps
Persistence: whether the relationship compounds over months or resets every time you close the app.
Whether the app has a point of view — a personality that stays stable rather than mirroring whatever you say back at you.
Initiative: does anything happen when you are not looking, and is it grounded in real context.
Whether the stated content policy matches the experience, in both directions.
Total annual cost and how much of the product is reachable for free.

Every option, ranked
1. Joii
An SFW companion that remembers you and checks in first.

SFW
Pick Joii if: You want the definition above delivered plainly — one companion, real memory, contact you did not have to initiate — with no romance layer and nothing you would mind being seen.
Pros
Memory spanning months is the core mechanic rather than a premium extra
Check-ins reference specific earlier conversations instead of generic prompts
A single stable personality that adapts to complement yours over time
Journal, goals, reminders and guided activities all draw on the same memory
$39.99 a year is the lowest paid price among dedicated companion apps
Cons
iOS only, with no Android app and no web version
One companion — no roster, no alternates, no character creation
No romantic or explicit content at all
Free use is capped at 250 messages and 10 stored memories a day
Our verdict: Joii is the clearest expression of what this category is supposed to be: continuity, initiative and a fixed safe-for-work boundary, without a marketplace of characters bolted on. That focus is also what it costs you — one platform, one companion, one register, and no flexibility on any of the three.
The longest-running AI companion, with an avatar and romance tier.
Most established in the category

Friend-tier chat

SFW with romance
Pick Replika if: You want the app that effectively invented this market, with an avatar to look at and a track record long enough to research properly.
Pros
The reference implementation of the category, refined over years
3D avatar and AR mode that competitors have not matched
Free friend tier before any commitment
iOS, Android and web with a large user community
Cons
Roughly $69.99 a year for the full product
Dialogue quality has been overtaken by newer entrants
Abrupt policy changes to romance features have cost it user trust
The levelling loop feels like a game layer over the relationship
Our verdict: Every other app on this page is in some sense a response to Replika, which is why it belongs high on a category explainer. It is the most complete illustration of the idea, and no longer the best-written execution of it.
Strong long-term memory and multi-companion group chats.
Deepest memory in the category
Free tier
Limited trial
Paid plan
From around $15.99/mo
Platforms
iOS, Android, Web

NSFW optional
Pick Nomi if: Persistence is the whole reason the category interests you, and you want the app that pushes hardest on exactly that dimension.
Pros
Recall across weeks and months is the strongest available
Group chats give several companions one shared history
A content policy that is explicit and does not shift
Available on iOS, Android and web
Cons
Around $15.99 a month, the most expensive here
A trial too short to evaluate the memory it is known for
NSFW availability limits where you can realistically use it
Denser and more configuration-heavy than single-companion apps
Our verdict: If memory is the defining property of an AI companion, Nomi is the purest demonstration of the category’s ceiling. It shows what persistence buys you, and it prices that capability accordingly.
The deepest customization, including selfies and video.
Most customizable
Free tier
Limited trial
Paid plan
From around $14.99/mo
Platforms
iOS, Android, Web

NSFW optional
Pick Kindroid if: You take the view that a companion should be authored rather than encountered, and you want the tools to specify every part of it.
Pros
Character definition deeper than anything else in the category
Consistent generated imagery and voice tied to the persona
Memory strong enough to sustain a long relationship
iOS, Android and web
Cons
Roughly $14.99 a month with a minimal trial
Substantial setup before you get anything back
Output quality depends heavily on how well you wrote the character
Adult content availability restricts public use
Our verdict: Kindroid represents the authored end of the category, where the user does the character work and the app executes it faithfully. It is the strongest argument that a companion can be designed rather than discovered.
Millions of user-made characters, heavily moderated.
Largest character library
Free tier
Unlimited chat, queues at peak

c.ai+ from $9.99/mo

SFW
Pick Character.AI if: You are drawn to the breadth of the category rather than the depth — many characters, many conversations, no single thread to maintain.
Pros
Millions of user-made characters, unmatched by anything else
Free for most usage, on every major platform
Immediate to start with no configuration required
Voice available across characters
Cons
Limited context means characters forget details mid-conversation
Face-based age verification has been mandatory since April 2026
Filter behaviour is inconsistent
Peak-hour queues on the free tier
Our verdict: Character.AI is the counter-example that sharpens the definition: enormous variety, almost no persistence. It shows that a huge character catalogue and a genuine ongoing relationship are separate products that happen to share an interface.
A calm, well-written conversational AI with no persona layer.

Pick Pi if: You want to test whether talking to an AI regularly does anything for you at all, before spending money or picking a side of the category.
Pros
Free with no paid tier and no upsell
Conversational writing better than most paid apps here
Available on iOS, Android and in a browser
Calm, low-pressure tone with no relationship performance
Cons
Limited memory means nothing accumulates between sessions
No persona and no relationship framing
Never initiates contact
None of the structural tools the dedicated apps include
Our verdict: By the strict definition at the top of this page, Pi is not really an AI companion — it is a very good conversational assistant. It earns a place here because it is the cheapest possible way to discover whether the category is for you.
Pick Paradot if: You want the one-companion model rather than a roster, you are not on an iPhone, and Replika is not the tone you were looking for.
Pros
One persistent being rather than a browsable catalogue
Memory positioned as the central feature
Around $12.99 a month, below Nomi and Kindroid
Voice on iOS, Android and web
Cons
A small user base and limited third-party coverage
Romance framing means it is not a work-safe choice
Writing quality below the category leaders
A tight free allowance
Our verdict: Paradot matters on this page because it proves the single-companion model is not iPhone-specific. It is the answer for Android users who want that shape and find Replika’s presentation off-putting.
A general-purpose assistant, not built as a companion.
Best general assistant

Pick ChatGPT if: You want to understand where a general assistant ends and a purpose-built companion begins, using a tool you already have installed.
Pros
Reliable memory for concrete facts across conversations
Excellent voice mode on every platform
A free tier that covers most casual use
Handles work and conversation from the same app
Cons
No relationship framing and no proactive contact whatsoever
Defaults to solving rather than sitting with a problem
$20 a month exceeds most dedicated companion subscriptions
No journal, goals or wellbeing structure
Our verdict: ChatGPT is the boundary case that defines the category by contrast. It remembers, it talks well, and it has no interest in you between sessions — which is precisely the thing an AI companion is built to have.
Work out which half of the category you want before comparing prices, because the two halves solve different problems. If you want one relationship that accumulates and occasionally reaches out, Joii is our pick on iPhone, Paradot is the Android equivalent, and Replika is the safest well-known choice. If you want characters, stories and range, Nomi and Kindroid justify their subscriptions and Character.AI is unbeatable on breadth. And if you are not yet sure the category suits you, spend a fortnight with Pi first — it costs nothing and answers the question honestly.
Where Joii falls short
We make Joii, so here is the honest version. If any of these matter to you, one of the other apps above is the better choice.
iOS only — no Android app and no web version
One companion, not a roster of characters you create or browse
No romance or explicit roleplay — Joii is safe-for-work by design
Strongest in English
Not a medical device, and not a substitute for professional therapy
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 38 App Store ratings (US App Store, checked 27 July 2026).
An AI companion is a chat application designed around one continuing relationship rather than one-off answers. It keeps a persistent memory of your life, maintains a consistent personality, and often initiates contact. That persistence is the defining feature — it is what separates a companion from a general-purpose chatbot that starts fresh each time.
ChatGPT is built to complete tasks and answer questions, and although it now remembers facts about you, it never reaches out and has no relationship framing. An AI companion is built around continuity and emotional context: it follows up, it holds a stable personality, and it is designed to be part of your week rather than a tool you open when you need something.
The research is early and mixed. For most people, regular use appears broadly neutral to mildly positive, particularly as a place to process thoughts or practise difficult conversations. The risk is displacement — using it instead of human contact rather than alongside it. A useful check is whether your time with real people is increasing or shrinking since you started.
The good ones do. Joii and Nomi retain specific details across months and raise them unprompted, while Replika and Paradot hold a reasonable amount and Character.AI, Chai and Talkie retain very little between sessions. Memory quality varies more between apps than any other feature, so test it before committing to an annual plan.
Anywhere from nothing to about $240 a year. Pi is entirely free, Joii is $39.99 a year or $8.99 a week, Replika runs near $69.99 a year, and Nomi and Kindroid cost roughly $180 to $200 annually at their monthly rates. Most apps offer a free tier large enough to judge the conversation before you pay.
Joii is made by Delusional, Inc., publisher of this site. An AI companion is not a medical device or a substitute for professional care. Competitor facts verified 27 July 2026.
