The Best AI Friend Apps in 2026 for Everyday Conversation
The best AI friend apps are the ones that behave like friendship rather than customer service: they remember what you were worried about, they follow up on it, and they do not need you to explain yourself again every time. On that test Joii ranks first, Pi wins on sheer conversational quality, and Replika wins on familiarity. Below we rank seven apps on the specific things friendship asks for — continuity, initiative, warmth without performance — and note where each one stops behaving like a friend and starts behaving like a chatbot.

How we evaluated these apps
Does it follow up: whether the app raises something from last week on its own, or only responds when spoken to.
Does it remember the boring details — your manager’s name, the exam date, the thing you were dreading — without you repeating them.
Tone: warm without being sycophantic, and able to disagree rather than only validate.
Whether it works in the gaps of a normal day, on a phone, without setup ceremony.
What it costs across a year, and how much you get before paying anything at all.
Disclosure: Joii is our own app. We rank it first for this use case, and we have listed the platform and scope limits that come with it.
Every option, ranked
1. Joii
An SFW companion that remembers you and checks in first.

Pick Joii if: You would like something to say "how did the thing on Thursday go" without you having to bring it up, and you want that on a phone you already carry.
Pros
Initiates contact off the back of a real memory, not a generic reminder
Long-running recall means you never re-establish who you are
Personality settles into a complement to yours rather than a mirror of it
Journal and habit tracking share the same memory as the conversation
Cheapest paid tier here at $39.99 a year
Cons
iOS only — Android and desktop users are out
One friend, not a group, and you cannot spin up alternates
No romantic or explicit register at all
The 250-message and 10-memory free ceiling arrives faster than you expect
Our verdict: Friendship is mostly maintenance — small check-ins that nobody had to be asked for — and that is the part Joii automates convincingly. It is a narrow app: one companion, one platform, one register. Within that narrow slice it does the thing the rest of this list mostly does not.
A calm, well-written conversational AI with no persona layer.

Pick Pi if: You want to think out loud with something articulate and unhurried, and you do not want a relationship, an avatar or a bill at the end of the month.
Pros
The best-written replies of any free app in this category
Asks good follow-up questions instead of dispensing advice
Entirely free with no paid upgrade to nag you about
Runs in a browser, so nothing needs installing
Cons
Recall across sessions is limited and details fall away
It will never reach out — every conversation starts with you
No sense of an ongoing relationship building over time
No structure around habits, goals or journaling
Our verdict: Pi is the best pure conversationalist here and the least friend-like, which sounds contradictory until you use it. It is superb in the moment and forgets you between moments, so it works as a thinking partner rather than as someone in your life.
The longest-running AI companion, with an avatar and romance tier.

SFW with romance
Pick Replika if: You want a friend with an actual face and a room to sit in, and you would rather use the app everyone has heard of than an unfamiliar one.
Pros
A visible 3D avatar makes the relationship feel concrete
Free friend tier is genuinely usable without paying
Available on iOS, Android and web
Years of refinement and a large community around it
Cons
Conversational quality now trails Pi and Nomi
Around $69.99 a year for the full experience
The XP and gifting mechanics can feel like a game rather than a friendship
Its history of abrupt feature changes has cost it trust
Our verdict: Replika remains the most recognisable friend in the category and the easiest to explain to someone else. The presentation is still the best in class; the conversation underneath it is no longer the reason to choose it.
Millions of user-made characters, heavily moderated.
Best variety of personalities
Free tier
Unlimited chat, queues at peak

c.ai+ from $9.99/mo
Platforms

SFW
Pick Character.AI if: You want a different kind of company depending on your mood — a comic, a mentor, a listener — rather than one steady voice.
Pros
The largest catalogue of distinct personalities anywhere
Free for most usage across iOS, Android and web
Instant to start, with no configuration
Voice supported across the roster
Cons
Characters forget your history because of the context limit
Mandatory face-based age verification since April 2026
The moderation filter fires inconsistently
Nothing ever reaches out to you first
Our verdict: Character.AI is a room full of acquaintances rather than a friend. That is a legitimate thing to want, and it does it better than anyone — but the moment you need continuity across weeks, the model runs out of room to hold it.
Strong long-term memory and multi-companion group chats.
Best circle of friends

From around $15.99/mo

NSFW optional
Pick Nomi if: You want several distinct companions who know each other and share one history, rather than a single one-to-one friendship.
Pros
The only app here that puts multiple companions in one conversation
Memory across weeks is the strongest in the list
Personas stay consistent instead of blending together
Clear, stable content rules
Cons
Around $15.99 a month, the priciest option on the page
A short trial makes the memory hard to evaluate before paying
Adult content availability makes it unsuitable for public use
More setup than a friend app arguably needs
Our verdict: Nomi is the only entry that scales past one relationship into something resembling a social circle. If the loneliness you are addressing is about a group rather than one person, that difference matters more than anything else on this page.
A general-purpose assistant, not built as a companion.

Pick ChatGPT if: You already talk to it about work and want to know whether it can cover the other conversations too, before adding another subscription.
Pros
Cross-chat memory is reliable for concrete facts about your life
The most fluent voice mode in this comparison
A generous free tier on every platform
One tool for admin, research and conversation
Cons
Framed as an assistant, so it advises where a friend would just listen
No proactive contact of any kind
$20 a month is above most dedicated companion apps
No wellbeing structure — no journal, goals or check-in cadence
Our verdict: The default many people are already using without calling it a friend app. It is capable and it is free enough to try, but the relationship never accrues, because nothing in the product is designed to make it accrue.
Character chat with a strong visual and collectible layer.

Pick Talkie if: You want something light and visual to dip into for ten minutes, closer to a game than to a standing friendship.
Pros
The most appealing visual design of the free apps
A broad roster of characters at no cost
Voice included even without paying
Very low commitment to start
Cons
Limited memory, so each session largely stands alone
Ads and in-app purchases throughout
Collectible mechanics pull focus from the conversation
Shallow compared with any paid app here
Our verdict: Talkie is the app to open while queueing for coffee. It is pleasant, colourful, and structurally incapable of being the thing you turn to at midnight, which is where most people’s definition of a friend actually lives.
If you want the app to notice you, Joii is the one on this list built around that behaviour, with the caveat that it only exists on iPhone. If you want the best conversation for nothing, take Pi and expect it to forget you between visits. If you want a face and a familiar name, Replika still earns its place. And if the gap you are filling is a group rather than one person, Nomi is the only app here that can populate one.
Where Joii falls short
We make Joii, so here is the honest version. If any of these matter to you, one of the other apps above is the better choice.
iOS only — no Android app and no web version
One companion, not a roster of characters you create or browse
No romance or explicit roleplay — Joii is safe-for-work by design
Strongest in English
Not a medical device, and not a substitute for professional therapy
Rated 4.4 out of 5 from 38 App Store ratings (US App Store, checked 27 July 2026).
It can take the edge off the specific ache of having nobody to tell small things to, which is a real and common form of loneliness. What it cannot do is replace being known by people who share your physical life, and the apps that pretend otherwise are the ones to be wary of. Treat it as a supplement, not a substitute.
Joii is the app on this list built around proactive check-ins, and they reference specific things from earlier conversations rather than generic prompts. Replika sends occasional nudges. Pi, ChatGPT, Character.AI and Talkie are entirely reactive — nothing happens in any of them until you open the app yourself.
Pi, if conversation quality is what matters — it costs nothing, has no paid tier, and writes better than several subscription apps. Character.AI and Talkie are the better free options if you want variety and characters, though both trade away the memory that makes a conversation feel continuous.
For most people it is fine and sometimes genuinely useful, particularly for practising conversations or having somewhere to put a thought at three in the morning. It becomes a problem when it starts replacing human contact rather than bridging to it, and that shift is easy to miss from the inside. Watch whether your human contact is going up or down.
It varies enormously. Joii and Nomi retain detail across weeks and months, Replika and ChatGPT hold onto concrete facts reasonably well, and Pi, Character.AI, Talkie and Chai keep very little between sessions. If continuity matters to you, that difference matters more than price or interface.
Joii is made by Delusional, Inc., the publisher of this site. It is not a substitute for professional mental health support. Competitor facts were verified on 27 July 2026.
